From the mountains of North Carolina, UpBeet Candles are a hand-made and non-toxic alternative to the candles often found in stores. For this project, I worked with the owner of the company to create a brand that was both fun and sophisticated while maintaining the spirit of its DIY roots.
As the idea for the name of the company stems from a tattoo of a beet that the owner has, the forms within the logo mimic those of the tattoo.
After going over the first concepts with my client, while the third option was closest, we felt weren’t quite there yet. Wanting to maintain a bit of playfulness but continue the ideas within the third concept, I found the serifed typeface Filosofia Unicase by Emigre, Inc. The letterforms are clean and sophisticated, but retain some whimsy by having the lowercase and uppercase letters the same height.
I chose to incorporate the shape of the beet within the name, with the most notable parts coming out from the first “e” for the best visual balance.
Offered in three different sizes with over 15 different scents, each label features the beet image in color(s) that coordinate with the scent of the candle; the smaller jars also have a lid label while the larger jars have a dust cover. By removing the color from the main logo, the individual label colors could be added to represent the different scents without worry of conflicting color schemes.
Since there are scents that are only offered at certain times, or in limited runs, the owner also requested a blank label so they could hand-write the scent in. Leaning into that concept, I chose a hand-written style font for the names of the candles.
