Inspired by the odd and the creepy, Sinister Ceramics is a Raleigh-based ceramicist that shows their work in markets around the triangle area. I partnered with the owner to create a brand that reflects the spirit of their creations.

I chose the Blackletter font Rotunda Veneta Regular as the primary typeface as a nod to gothic/medieval styles. By replacing the tittle on the “i” with a star, the form becomes reminiscent of a candle with influence from early astronomical drawings. The secondary font, Alegreya Sans SC, is a sans-serif the was chosen for its simplicity and legibility to contrast the bold personality of the primary font.

Maintaining the gothic theme, the main colors are black and an off-white. The secondary colors are meant to reflect the ceramic medium, referencing clay and stone.

Teeth are the primary subjects of the owner’s work. By turning these into line illustrations, I made sure they were featured within the branding as optional illustrative additions alongside the logo.
